Baby Shower Gift Idea Embelle Bibs Review | Emily Reviews

My sister has a 2 year old son and is due with a new baby in March, though we don?t yet know the baby?s gender. While her little guy isn?t very old and most of the stuff she had for him can be reused ? especially if this new baby is a boy, it?s always nice to get some new things as well. I have a very large family and my sister got tons of items during her baby shower with my nephew. It makes it a bit hard to get her something that she doesn?t already have, so I?ve been on the lookout for unique baby shower gift ideas and Embelle Baby Bibs definitely fits that bill. The bibs are 100% cotton and come pre washed. Of course, this means that they can be thrown through the washer and dryer when they get dirty. What makes Embelle bibs unique is their design. Instead of being cute patterns or?pictures?of baby animals they work almost like costumes ? turning your baby into a cowboy, doctor, cat, etc!

The baby?s dad and both grandpa?s are really into fishing so my personal favorite is the fisherman bib. If you?re like me and shopping prior to knowing the gender or if your family member as chosen to wait until birth to find out, there are several bibs that work for both genders including the cat, dog, and referee. In fact, I plan to give all of the bibs that I got for review to my sister regardless of the baby?s gender and I got the fisherman, doctor, cat, dog and cowboy bibs. I know they?ll look cute on the baby no matter what.

You can find Embelle Bibs at Target and other retails for around $5-$6 each. There are even a few seasonal options like santa and a snowman.

How To Avoid Twitter Spam | Business 2 Community

Yes, Twitter has a spam problem. But you can do something about it.

In Why I Joined App.net, I explained that a main reason was Twitter spam, which is any unsolicited contact whether by direct message, through your tweet stream, or mentions.

Let?s see what you can do today to ward off these unfortunately well-known Twitter annoyances.

How to avoid direct message spam

Only people you follow can send you direct messages, so just don?t follow spammers.

Barring the occasional accidental follow, you probably don?t follow spammers already unless you use Auto-Follow to follow everyone who follows you. And if you?re using Auto-Follow, you could simply turn it off. Case closed, right?

Well, not necessarily. If you had a good reason for using Auto-Follow in the first place, you might not rush to get rid of it.

But like most people, you want to have your cake and eat it too, I hear you.

In that case, to keep using Auto-Follow but cut off most, if not all, direct message spam, opt-out of automated direct messages from Social Oomph, a popular site for using Auto-Follow. You might miss a few good automated direct messages, but the vast majority will be the kind you can live without.

What if you have a friend who changed habits and started spamming you? This makes them a spammer i.e. someone not to follow.

If you think that?s a bit harsh, you can either ask your friend to stop or you can stop following them outright. It all depends on how much you enjoyed their previous tweets, and how much you think their future tweets will continue to bring you joy.

How to avoid tweet stream and @mentions spam

Again- stop following the people who are spamming you.

On the web, your tweet stream appears at twitter.com when you?re logged in and is filled with tweets from the people you follow.

If there?s any spam in your tweet stream, it?s either because you?re following a spammer or one of your friends has inadvertently retweeted one (in which case, tell your friend asap before other friends get angry with them).

If there are few enough spammers in your tweet stream that you can take care of them manually, then your best move is to report them as spam. This will also block them, which has the following effects according to Twitter:

Blocked users cannot:

  • Add your Twitter account to their lists.
  • Have their @replies or mentions show in your mentions tab (although these Tweets may still appear in search).
  • Follow you.
  • See your profile picture on their profile page or in their timeline.

This will also immediately stop you from following them.

However, if you?re an Auto-Follow user who has accumulated a large incidental following of spammers and consequently, a large mess in your tweet stream, blocking them manually takes too much effort to bother with.

Instead, you need to start using a Twitter VIP List.

In Almost 3000 Words On Everything You Need To Best Use Twitter Lists, I explained that a VIP List is ?a kind of mega-list that you should use to follow the people whose tweets you absolutely don?t want to miss. If you follow so many people on Twitter that your main Twitter stream is mostly filled with tweets you don?t care about, use your VIP List as your new default Twitter stream. To get an idea of who should be on your VIP List, see who you?ve mentioned (using the @) or direct-messaged recently.?

Since you control who?s on your VIP List, you control whose tweets show up and whose tweets won?t.

Not only will this eliminate spam for your daily tweet sessions, it will also focus your Twitter networking to the people you care about most.

Obama, Romney Take Time Off Trail for Debate Prep

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - President Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney are taking time off the campaign trail to prep for Tuesday's presidential debate, a sign of the importance of their second face-off, which comes just three weeks before Election Day.

Obama is spending three days huddled with advisers in the battleground state of Virginia, hunkering down at the luxury Kingsmill Resort along the James River in historic Williamsburg. Romney, meanwhile, is preparing in the Boston area.

After his lackluster showing in Denver, advisers say the president is looking forward to answering questions from the American people in round two, which adopts a town hall format.

"The question is not just which candidate connects with the questioner, but who has the better policies for the American people for the next four years and on that front the president has a great advantage," a senior Obama campaign adviser said.

Over the last two weeks, the Obama campaign has launched more aggressive attacks against Romney, casting him as an extreme conservative trying to reinvent himself as a moderate just weeks before the election.

"Governor Romney has been making pitches all of his life," the adviser said. "He knows how to say what people want to hear, whether that was during his time at Bain [Capital] or during the dozens of town halls he did during the primary."

While both candidates are forgoing campaign events and rallies to study for the debate, both campaigns launched new campaign ads over the weekend.

Meteorologist: supersonic skydive 'a go' on Sunday

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) ? The weekend weather in New Mexico appears to be cooperating this time for a daredevil trying to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier.

Meteorologist Don Day said the weather forecast remained favorable for former Austrian paratrooper Felix Baumgartner's jump, scheduled for early Sunday near Roswell, N.M.

Baumgartner will be prepared at sunrise to launch his 30 million cubic foot helium balloon to hoist a 3,000-pound capsule that will carry the jumper 23 miles up in the sky. The jump has already been canceled twice due to high winds, once damaging the balloon and forcing use of a backup for Sunday's planned launch.

Baumgartner will try to break a 1960 high-altitude parachuting record. He will also test a pressurized suit that is designed for stratospheric jumps.

He called Tuesday's postponement nerve-wracking but said Sunday's date is one already steeped in aviation history. On October 14, 1947, an experimental rocket plane Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier for the first time over Edwards Air Force Base in California.

"I want to break the speed of sound, no matter what it takes," he said in a statement. "As long as we have a spare balloon and more launch days, I'm good."

Bosses, workers fight over who owns social media

By Bob Sullivan

If you and your company get an ugly divorce, does your company get to keep the friends?

A controversial court ruling last week has shined a light on this made-in-the-digital age problem: Who owns Twitter followers, Facebook friends and LinkedIn connections when employers and employees part ways? With personal and professional lives mingled online as never before, a distinctly 21st Century fight is brewing over who owns your friendships.

A ?federal judge in Pennsylvania on Oct. 4 rejected a claim by Linda Eagle that her prior employee had illegally accessed her LinkedIn account after she left her company, Edcomm. Workers there changed Eagle's password after her departure, preventing her from accessing critical contacts and, she claimed, damaged her ability to find new work.?

But the judge dismissed most elements of her lawsuit, giving fuel to those who argue that social media groomed at work belongs to employers.

"The initial outcome of the case is very troubling," said Bradley Shear, a Washington, D.C.,-area lawyer who specializes in social media. It opens the door for employers to claim ownership of any social account -- even personal accounts -- because Eagle's account was created under her own name, he warned. "It demonstrates there's a need for people to become much more educated about this."

Other court rulings have hinted that courts might be inclined to see things the employer's way.? Earlier this year, a federal California court allowed a publication named PhoneDog to proceed with a lawsuit against former writer Noah Kravitz, who had amassed 17,000 Twitter followers while working there.

Kravitz claimed the followers were his, but PhoneDog sued for ownership in 2011, and the judge denied a motion to dismiss the case in a February ruling ? a positive sign for PhoneDog?s legal argument. Two other recent cases also sided with firms making ownership claims on social media contacts.

Eric Goldman, a law professor at Santa Clara University, cautioned that each of these cases is "incredibly fact specific," and none establishes a universal principle that could be widely applied. Still, workers should be on notice that their employer getting their ?friends in the divorce is not so far-fetched.

"People should learn from this that it's dangerous to mix business with pleasure," he said.

In many ways, the "who owns the connections and the conversations" issue is unique to social media and the digital age.? In the past, there was never any question that a public relations professional was speaking on behalf of a company, and that communication was company-owned ?? ?as were the contact lists. But what of a long-time flack who arrives at a new firm with a long list of her own Twitter followers, and who writes messages using that account that are decidedly personal?? Who owns those messages, and those contacts? The issue is as murky as most employees' work-life balance.

?Many of these accounts have 'mingled interests,' " Goldman said. ?That makes things difficult.?

In fact, the very nature of social media means the accounts don't really work unless they have a touch of personality. Tweeted press releases aren't interesting on Twitter; personal wit is regarded above all, and encouraged at every smart firm with a social media presence.?

On the other hand, it's reasonable to think of LinkedIn contacts as akin to customer lists, which are clearly proprietary and belong to employers as intellectual property. For decades, firms have claimed ownership of client lists (and employees have tried sneak out the door with them). If a LinkedIn account is little more than a list of business connections that are directly related to a job, why wouldn't a company claim it?

Of course, fights over Rolodexes aren?t new ? but old-fashioned piles of business cards make a poor analogy for a long-curated group of Twitter followers. ?Besides, users who have a developed a personal relationship with a social media creator aren't likely to be much use to a company which takes over an account, Goldman noted.

?You can grab the Rolodex, but you can?t really grab the relationship?? he said.

There's also the subtle "you are nothing without me" argument. When television anchor and early Twitter adopter Rick Sanchez left CNN, he had a follower list of 150,000. Without CNN, Sanchez would not have compiled such a following, and when he left, observers imagined a brewing controversy. A fight was averted when CNN Sanchez keep the list as long as he changed his Twitter handle, from @ricksanchezcnn to @ricksancheznews .

LinkedIn hasn't offered a lot of guidance in the issue, but in a brief statement to NBC News, the company seemed to suggest that it might take up the fight on behalf of users at some point.

"We don't know the specific facts and circumstances of the relationships or agreements between Ms. Eagle and her former employer, nor are we parties to the lawsuit, so we can't comment on it specifically," said LinkedIn spokesman Hani Durzy. "However, LinkedIn prides itself on being a members-first organization, and in general we believe that a member's professional profile belongs to them.?

Other digital-era issues offer conflicting notions.? In the United States, employees have no right to privacy over emails they write at work, even if they are using personal email accounts. Employers are within their rights to employ snooping software to watch everything workers do with company computers.? That might suggest any Facebook or Twitter work done by an employee on company property belongs to the company. On the other hand, there's a long history of domain name confusion that sides with workers. Employees who register company domains in their own names, for example, often end up with an awful lot of leverage after they leave the company -- they can redirect the domain, for example.

To Shear, the lawyer specializing in social media, that leads to a practical question for companies that might be inclined to make claims on social media accounts.

"LinkedIn is an external system. Why are you are putting resources into an external system that you don't have control over?? Companies prefer their own email to Gmail for this reason," he said.?

One critical element of the Eagle case is that she had shared her password with a coworker, who updated the LinkedIn page for her. That put the company in a good position to make a claim -- it could change the password, lock her out and ask questions later.? So should employees refuse such password sharing? Some companies compel users to do so, though increasingly state legislatures are considering laws making the practice illegal. ?Meanwhile, most social networks -- including LinkedIn -- say it's against their terms of service to share passwords.

There may already be existing laws that cover a lot of this controversy. Non-compete and non-solicitation agreements -- which prevent workers from contacting clients after exiting a firm -- prevent a lot of the issues that businesses are really concerned about when they make social media contact claims.? Still, those are often unenforceable, particularly in California, which has broad employment right laws. That has Shear and Goldman concerned that future employment agreements will contain the broadest possible provisions, with companies seeking rights to all online relationships while workers are in their employ.

"That would be an egregious overreach," Goldman warned.

It would also kill the spirit of social media, as popular Twitter posters would disappear overnight, each time they change jobs.

"In the end, we as readers will be the losers, because we won't be able to find the people we are looking for," he said

There is one saving grace in this discussion: Despite our pride of amassing a few thousand friends or followers, Goldman points out that most social media accounts are not so valuable that they are worth fighting over in court.

"The economics don't support litigation," he said. "How much is an account with 17,000 followers worth?? At $1 a follower, that's $17,000 -- that would hardly even get (the lawsuit) filed."

RED TAPE WRESTLING TIPS
Both Shear and Goldman stressed that companies need to have very specific social media policies -- pre-nuptial agreements, if you will -- specifying who gets what when the inevitable breakup arrives.?

For workers who are concerned, Shear offers three quick tips.

  • Make sure the email used to set up the social networking account is a personal email that you control, not a corporate email address that can be cut off -- and could be used as evidence of ownership in litigation. Also, use personal contact information, such as a home number and address.
  • Make sure the name on the account is personal -- Sally Smith, not Sally_XYZCompany. Finally, use a personal photograph, rather than a company logo, in the profile picture.

'Lola Basyang' promotes values education thru storytelling | loQal ...

QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA?In celebration of National Children?s Month, the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) will stage its longest-running play ?Mga Kwento ni Lola Basyang.?

Stories of magical spells, kings, and their kingdoms will again enchant young audiences, which also promotes freedom of expression among children and encourages them to participate in public activities.

The National Children?s Month also reiterates the call for every Filipino to teach children right conduct and Filipino values. From October 5 to 14, children and even the young-at-heart are up for a three story treat.

?Ang Prinsipeng Mahaba ang Ilong,? a story about a prince who grew up thinking he was normal until he stepped out of the castle; ?Ang Binibining Tumalo sa Mahal na Datu? introduces Sharay, a servant?s daughter from Tondo who surpassed the King?s three challenges to make herself worthy of the prince; and the new story, ?Ang Mahiwagang Kuba,? tells the tale of Prince Jorge, who was cursed to be a hunchback and needs a lady?s kiss to reverse the spell.

A visual spectacle on its own, ?Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang? brings life to a rich memory of each one?s childhood, said? director Phil Noble, who draws inspiration from the circus performances he watched during fiestas in his hometown of Taal in Batangas.

?In directing Lola Basyang, I brought together all my memories of my childhood and used my love for the circus, wishing that the audience will enjoy the circus as much as I do.?

?I want to create a playground with this play. I want the children to know what the circus is all about?I want us all to be childlike, to be children again, even for a while,? Noble said.

Costume designers Ron Alfonso and Boni Juan said they used household items like spoons, laundry clips, puzzle tiles and hand-sewn rags to create the playful costumes.

For tickets and inquiries, contact PETA at (02) 7256244 or email petatheater@gmail.com.

CDC: Meningitis outbreak growing, 14 people dead

Map shows states affected by the meningitis outbreak and those receiving suspected tainted medications

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal health officials have tracked down 12,000 of the roughly 14,000 people who may have received contaminated steroid shots in the nation's growing meningitis outbreak, warning Thursday that patients will need to keep watch for symptoms of the deadly infection for months.

"We know that we are not out of the woods yet," Dr. J. Todd Weber of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said as the death toll reached 14.

Of the 170 people sickened in the outbreak, all but one have a rare fungal form of meningitis after receiving suspect steroid shots for back pain, the CDC said. The other case is an ankle infection discovered in Michigan; steroid shots also can be given to treat aching knees, shoulders or other joints.

Fungus has been found in at least 50 vials of an injectable steroid medication made at a specialty compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts, investigators said. Health authorities haven't yet said how they think the medication was contaminated, but they have ruled out other suspects ? other products used in administering the shots ? and the focus continues to be on that pharmacy, the New England Compounding Center.

Compounding pharmacies traditionally supply products that aren't commercially available, unlike the steroid at issue in the outbreak. And Dr. Madeleine Biondolillo of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said it appears the company violated state law governing those pharmacies, which aren't supposed to do large-scale production like a drug manufacturer. Instead, they're supposed to produce medication for patient-specific prescriptions, she said.

"This organization chose to apparently violate the licensing requirements under which they were allowed to operate," she told reporters Thursday.

Company officials weren't immediately available to comment Thursday but earlier this week declined comment except to say they were cooperating with the investigation.

Idaho becomes the 11th state to report at least one illness. The others are Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.

Last month, after illnesses began coming to light, the company recalled three lots of the steroid medicine ? known as preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate? that were made in May, June and August. The recall involved about 17,700 single-dose vials of the steroid sent to clinics in 23 states.

It's not known if all or just some of the vials were contaminated, or how many doses were administered for back pain or for other reasons. Those given joint injections are not believed to be at risk for fungal meningitis, which is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. A back injection would put any contaminant in more direct contact with that lining.

Symptoms of meningitis include severe headache, nausea, dizziness and fever. The CDC said many of the cases have been mild, and some people had strokes. Symptoms have been appearing between one and four weeks after patients got the shots, but CDC officials on Thursday warned at least one illness occurred 42 days after a shot.

The fungus is difficult to grow in lab analyses, and health officials on Thursday issued an unusual piece of advice to doctors: If a patient who got the injection starts to develop meningitis symptoms, he or she should be treated, even if testing is negative for the fungus.

The fungus behind the outbreaks was initially identified as Aspergillus, but as more testing of patients has been completed, it's become clear that another fungus ? a kind of black mold called Exserohilum ? is the primary cause. As of Wednesday, CDC's fungal disease laboratory confirmed Exserohilum in 10 people with meningitis and Aspergillus in just one.

Exserohilum is common in dirt and grasses, but this is the first time it's been identified as the cause of meningitis, said Weber, who is managing the CDC's response to the outbreak.

Health officials are hurriedly trying to determine the best way to treat this kind of an illness, and have settled on two very strong anti-fungal medications. Consulting with experts, they're making a best guess as to the dosage and length of time patients will have to be treated.

"This is new territory," Weber said.

Fungal meningitis is not contagious like the more common forms.

Ryan prepares to take on skilled debater Biden

WASHINGTON (AP) ? To prepare for his biggest test yet on the national stage, untested debater Paul Ryan has been hauling two thick briefing books around the country and intently studying up on Vice President Joe Biden, who has been sparring over public policy since the Wisconsin congressman was learning how to talk.

Ryan, the 42-year-old Republican vice presidential nominee, has suggested his youth will be an asset in connecting with voters at the sole vice presidential debate Thursday in Kentucky against the 69-year-old former senator. But risks abound for the GOP rising star, who hasn't participated in a campaign debate since his first run for office 14 years ago.

The main goal for Ryan's inner-circle: get him comfortable answering questions in broad terms that connect with voters and avoid the wonky, in-the-weeds answers more appropriate for a budget hearing than a living room.

Ryan's team wants to keep him talking about positive changes a Romney-Ryan administration would mean for the country, not a full-throated defense of the campaign's sometimes nebulous math.

As the House Republicans' top budget writer, aides say Ryan is confident he can handle questions about federal spending and taxes. He is a bit more nervous on international affairs ? and for good reason. Ryan was thrust into the national spotlight a few months ago when he joined the Republican ticket but has limited exposure in that arena.

Biden is a former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a skilled debater, both within the administration and against its critics, and someone whose opinion President Barack Obama seeks out on major decisions.

Ryan also is bracing for Biden to try to help Obama overcome a rough patch by staking out an aggressive tone.

"I really think that because they had such a bad debate that Joe is just going to come flying at us," Ryan said this week.

His biggest worry: looking unprepared the way his mentor and former boss, Jack Kemp, did in the 1996 debate against Vice President Al Gore.

Ryan has spent hours huddling with advisers to polish his delivery and has been cramming with aides to sharpen his grasp of foreign policy and national security issues. As they prepared in Virginia's mountains about 150 miles from Washington, Ryan focused on trying to shoehorn knowledge gained from seven terms in the House into two-minute answers. He has watched video of Biden's 2008 vice presidential debate and recent campaign appearances. He knows Biden's cadences and verbal ticks, including the signature "ladies and gentlemen" and punchy "folks" to get the audience's attention.

Ryan also has spent time working on trying to keep Biden from cutting him off, talking over him or throwing a wrench into his rehearsed answers. During practice debates, his stand-in for Biden, former Solicitor General Ted Olson, has been aggressive in trying to throw Ryan off his game.

Above all else, aides tell Ryan to avoid specific numbers.

"He's learning how to debate," said Michael Steel, Ryan's traveling spokesman who was a top aide to House Speaker John Boehner. "It's not about learning policy. ... It's about learning how to debate at this level."

Ryan and his aides also are trying to play up the vice president's skills and perhaps set unrealistic expectations for Biden, who is doing his own cram sessions in Delaware before the meeting in Danville, Ky.

"Joe Biden's been doing this for 40 years," Ryan told WTMJ-AM radio in Milwaukee. "I mean, the man ran for president twice, he's the sitting vice president. And this is my first time on this kind of stage. So sure, there's a lot of pressure."

He later seemed to suggest that his youth gave him the upper hand.

"I've been in Congress 14 years. I'm a younger person. I'm next generation," he told WTOL in Toledo, Ohio. "I'm in my 40s. Joe Biden is in his 60s. I'm used to debating people in Joe's generation in Congress."

Ryan aides note that more people watched Biden's 2008 debate against then-Gov. Sarah Palin, the GOP vice presidential nominee, than any of Obama's debates against Republican John McCain. But that was as much about Palin's celebrity and curiosity about her and not the weight of the vice presidents' roles.

This time, Republicans have nominated a wonk who is a walking collection of think tank studies ? not a first-term governor from Alaska like Palin.

Ryan and Olson practiced three times before heading into more intense sessions in the Virginia mountains. They wore suits and ties and dined on room service in Washington hotels for two sessions, then donned plaid shirts and ate Jimmy Johns sandwiches at the other session in Ryan's hometown of Janesville, Wis.

In Virginia, they simulated the debate setting, in which Biden and Ryan will be seated.

Kerry Healey, who was Romney's lieutenant when he was governor of Massachusetts and now advises him on foreign policy, stood in for debate moderator Martha Raddatz of ABC News and even channeled the newswoman's speaking style.

Ryan has tried to keep the number of advisers in the room with him to fewer than 10. From time to time, Romney aides from the Boston campaign headquarters joined the preparations, including strategist Russ Schriefer, longtime loyalist Beth Myers and conservative liaison Peter Flaherty. Foreign policy hand Dan Senor also has been helping Ryan.

Ryan hasn't debated since his first run for Congress ? in 1998 at age 28.

Kingsbridge Armory Forum Offers Chance for Developers to Make ...

October 11, 2012 at 12:55 PM

By Alex Kratz

Developers will be presenting their plans to revamp and revitalize the vacant Kingsbridge Armory tonight at Lehman College. (Photo by Diana Perez)

During a forum tonight at Monroe College (6:30 p.m., 2501 Jerome Ave.), the two competing developers looking to revamp the Bronx?s long-vacant Kingsbridge Armory will have a chance to talk face-to-face with the community. It might be their last opportunity to sway locals into their corner before the city?s Economic Development Corporation, which is controlled by the mayor, makes a decision on which group gets the bid. (It?s unclear what the timetable is for making the Armory decision. At one point, it appeared a call would be made in September, but it?s now looking more likely that it will happen at some point before the end of the year. We have a call into the EDC to get more clarity on this.)

Community Board 7 is hosting the forum, which will feature 20-minute presentations from both proposals. Chairman Paul Foster says he hopes it gives people in the community a chance to really look at the proposals in-depth and hear from the developers themselves.

?We want it to be an informative meeting for the community,? he said, adding that the board wants to create ?an open discussion for the community.?

The two competing projects ? the world?s largest ice sports complex and a mixed-use creative market and recreation space ? offer sharp contrasts in style and substance.

A look inside the darkened Armory, which has been vacant for more than 15 years. (Photo by Diana Perez)

The group behind the Kingsbridge National Ice Center is led by Kevin Parker, an executive a former executive at Deutsche Bank, and is backed by two of the world?s biggest stars on ice ? Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater Sarah Hughes and New York Rangers hockey legend Mark Messier. Their plan is to retrofit the Armory into a regional ice sports Mecca, complete with nine skating rinks, including a 5,000-seat arena and an outdoor rink. The group has also pledged to dedicate 50,000 square feet for community space and develop a low-cost youth program based on a successful model created in Philadelphia by Flyers owner Ed Snider.

The ice center group says it would invest $250 million in renovating the Armory, create nearly 1,000 temporary construction jobs and about 275 permanent jobs that would all pay a ?living wage,? $10 an hour plus benefits or $11.50 without. They estimate some 2 million people will visit the ice center annually.

Parker?s group expressed interest in the Armory late last summer, long before the city released its request for proposals earlier this year and their enthusiasm for the project is largely seen as the reason why the city launched another RFP for the Armory. After Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. led a charge to kill a proposal by the Related Companies to turn the Armory into a giant shopping mall, Mayor Bloomberg blasted the project?s opponents and said he didn?t see the Armory being developed in the foreseeable future. Now Diaz is pushing hard for the ice center and has enlisted the support of local elected officials, including State Senator Gustavo Rivera (who lives just a few blocks from the Armory), and the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union.

The underdog in this race is Mercado Mirabo, the name Manhattan design firm Young Woo & Associates has given to its mixed-use project. Young Woo?s proposal has gained momentum after emerging from the original pool of proposals as a viable alternative to the ice complex and has picked up steam in recent months.

Young Woo has taken to calling its plan a ?futuristic town hall? that would be anchored with a movie theater complex that would include the nation?s first 4D theater, a Crunch gym and the world?s largest indoor climbing wall. It would also include a flexible retail market where entrepreneurs and artists could sell their wares without much overhead cost. Mercado Mirabo would include space for other recreational activities, including basketball and indoor soccer.

A view from the northwest of the Armory, which contains nearly 5 acres of space. (Photo by Diana Perez)

Since submitting its proposal, Young Woo?s proposal has evolved to include more specifics. Last spring, they partnered with the New York Gauchos, a Bronx-based youth basketball program, and Pinta and Grupo Arts, an international arts programming outfit.

But the component that is now fueling Young Woo?s late-game comeback, at least in the media, is its recent commitment to build a National Hip Hop Museum inside the Armory, which comes with the backing of Bronx hip hop stars Afrika Bambaataa and Melle Mel.

Young Woo says it will invest $100 million in the Armory and will create 1,500 jobs, 800 of them permanent, and, at least, 275 of them paying a living wage.

The Kingsbridge Armory Redevelopment Alliance (KARA) recently held a rally to say that whichever group wins the bid must sign onto a community benefits agreement that would include commitments to living wage jobs, a minimum of community space, no big box retail and job training programs, among other things.

Foster says he, personally, doesn?t have a preference for either project and that the board doesn?t have a plan to make a recommendation to the EDC before it makes its decision. Foster did, however, say that he wanted whatever goes into the Armory to include space for artists and community programs that would keep kids out of trouble. He mentioned the community?s desire for a hip hop museum and that the project doesn?t ?destroy the neighborhood businesses? surrounding the Armory. He also said job creation should be a factor in the EDC?s decision-making.

?In end,? Foster said, ?we?re going to have to live with this for the rest of our lives.?

What's the Fuss Over SEO? - News in Web Design & Online ...

Let?s admit that SEO has a bit of a poor stigma attached lately. From black-hat SEO companies to counterfeit link farm sites- it seems that websites will do just about anything to gain a high rating. However, at Blue Archer we think authentic search engine optimization should be a more comprehensive and all-encompassing service. ?It?s?shouldn't?be just about gaining a number 1 ranking on Google for a specific keyword; at the end of the day all websites have (or at least should have) the same goal: to serve their site visitor. ?That service could include providing information, resources, or products. Whichever it is, in order to serve your visitors, they have to be able to find the site. Enter,?Search Engine Optimization. An authentic SEO process begins with a comprehensive initial keyword analysis. ?With a full understanding of what the site provides its audience as well as who that target audience is, it is crucial to identify several appropriate keyword targets. Next, it is necessary to allocate the keyword targets to specific pages throughout the site by optimizing the title tags, meta data, H 1, H2, and H3 tags, ALT tags, the body text and other on-page locations. Unfortunately, that is where some SEO services stop.

But Search Engine Optimization is more than that.

There is necessary maintenance, analysis, and revision that is essential for optimization success. ?Successful internet marketing teams or business owners should examine and investigate the website traffic and examine how users are interacting with the site content. ?Traffic analytics paint a picture of the typical business? customer or potential customer. ?By tracking what pages interest users and how long they are staying on specific pages, it can help businesses refine services and communication tactics or mold completely new ones. ?Additionally, by using analytics data, marketing professionals or business owners can identify traffic funnels which lead to conversions such as visitors arriving at a ?Get More Information? page, a ?Contact Us? page or even a ?Request a Quote? destination.

What is happening on the specific website?isn't?the only factor in gaining an increased web presence. Social media platforms and blogs are essential for sites to help build a complete digital identity. They can build quality inbound links as well as increase the general brand awareness in specific niche industries. ?Constructing a full web presence parallels the basic keyword SEO tactics; when combined into an integrated service, websites will see an increase in quality-rich, targeted traffic.

So what?s the fuss over SEO? That depends on the conversation?you've?been listening in on. ?Ultimately, search engine optimization can be an extremely powerful tool for a business that can increase targeted traffic, help depict needs and wants of potential customers, refine the site-user experience, ?and create general brand awareness. We think that?s something to fuss over, don?t you? Perhaps it?s time to Rethink Your Website.
