Briton dead and second missing after horror crocodile attack in India

The body of a British man who went missing whilst holidaying with a friend on a crocodile infested river in India has been found.

Ian Turton, from York, was on holiday on the Cauvery River with a friend when he died.

It is thought Mr Turton was attacked and killed by a crocodile.

Rescuers have found an inflatable dinghy, thought to have been used by the pair with puncture marks that could have been caused by a crocodile.

Mr Turton's travelling companion Michael Easton, from London, is still missing, and is feared dead.

The 497-mile long (800km) Cauvery River is said to be infested with crocodiles.

It runs across three southern Indian states including Tamil Nadu where Mr Turton was working for US company Tenneco Automotive.

Today, Mr Turton's employer paid tribute to him - Sandro Paparelli, vice president and general manager of Tenneco Ride Control Europe, said, "Ian was a valued member of our advanced manufacturing and engineering team and worked in a variety of Tenneco locations to support the company's international expansion.

"He was a much appreciated colleague and leaves many friends all over the Tenneco world.

"We are all profoundly saddened by this tragic loss of life and extend our deepest sympathies to Ian's family and friends."

Yesterday Mr Turton's brother Nigel described him as a "very resourceful, adventurous man".

The foreign office said authorities are continuing to search the area.

A spokeswoman said, "We can confirm the death of a British national while on an excursion on the Cauvery River near Bangalore, India. Another British national is still missing.

"The local authorities continue their search of the area. We are providing consular assistance to the families."

An evaporative cooler is device designed with one or more surface to provide cooling to a place. This is equipped with an inside fan, which pulls outside air into the house or office. This is fitted with water absolving pads that absorb water to create fresh and cool air. Water is stored in a bottom pan and a small pump in this unit lifts the water to the top of each side to provide users with cool air. Nowadays the usage of evaporative cooling or mist cooling is quite common. The water cooling devices are now commonly used in house, factory or hotel and any other places. Many hotels and restaurants are also using them to relax their customers with that relaxing cool breeze. So, they are highly useful devices.

If you go to the market, you will find mist cooling systems available for commercial, agriculture and commercial applications. It means whether you need water cooling at home or you desire it to have at your factory, you can get a mist system to satisfy your each and every need. For example, if you require cooling your family, you can install a cooler in your room and enjoy the fresh air together with your family. Modern evaporative cooling devices can bring down the temperature of a space as much as 30?F. This is why most of the businesspersons or industrialists are making these devices to bring down that hot temperature at their commercial spaces to cool their employees in hot summer days.

The best thing about evaporative cooler is that you can you can utilize it to complement existing air conditioning system. Another key advantage of installing this type of cooling device is that it requires low installation and maintenance costs. Comparatively, evaporative cooling units use 75 percent less electricity. They efficiently pump out cool air, smoke, dust and pollution. They are affordable way of cooling your area. But remember, they may not be very effective during rainy season and humid climate. Also, these types of devices need water to properly function at your home, office, restaurant or factory.

Installing Evaporative Cooling Device

Small swamp coolers or water cooling devices are highly recommended for household usage, while large coolers are good for offices or industrial purpose. Most evaporative coolers are mounted on the roof, while you can also put them through windows or walls. Installing the window or wall-mounted horizontal units is much recommendable, as this is more convenient for maintenance and minimizes the chance of roof leaks. Made from rust and corrosion-resistant heavy galvanized steel, water coolers are the best option for cooling. However, you need to maintain them to keep them functioning at their best.

Alina Cruz writes about various water cooling techniques available today. He has published many articles on the benefits of using an evaporative cooler or mist cooling devices.

No progress on Iran Nuclear deal World News Tomorrow

iran_nuc_deal

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW ? BAGHDAD:? A diplomatic effort to persuade Iran to curtail its nuclear program was salvaged on Thursday by an agreement to hold further talks next month in Moscow, concluding two days of negotiations that exposed the difficulty of bridging the chasm between Tehran?s ambitions and the West?s demands.

Addressing reporters at the conclusion of the marathon talks, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton acknowledged that ?significant differences? remain over how to address world concerns over Iran?s nuclear activities. However, she said there was ?some common ground? and took heart that Iran had agreed to further talks.
?What we have now is some common ground and a meeting in place where we can take this forward,? she said.

The talks in Baghdad ? between Iran on the one hand and the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany on the other ? had been accompanied by high hopes that the current climate was conducive to progress on a deal that would help ease a decade of tensions over Iran?s nuclear activities and lift the threat of war hanging over the Middle East.

But the negotiations snagged early when Iran realized that a package of proposals put forward by the six world powers contained no relief from crippling economic sanctions, nor any acknowledgment of the right it claims to enrich uranium.

Iranian chief negotiator Saeed Jalili called the talks ?thorough but unfinished.? He said Iran was not prepared to make any concessions unless the six nations accept ?the undeniable right of the Iranian nation ? to enrich uranium.? U.S. officials said that is not a concession they are prepared to grant.

Jalili also made it clear that Iran would not countenance a deal that did not alleviate the sanctions that have been taking an increasingly devastating toll on Iran?s economy.

?We believe the pathway to talks can be successful only if destructive pathways working in parallel with the pathways are stopped,? Jalili said. ?This strategy of pressure is over. It is outmoded.?

Iran did concede, however, that it is open to negotiations about the level to which it will continue to enrich uranium. Iran currently has the capacity to enrich uranium up to 20 percent, which puts it within technical reach of the 90 percent level required for the fissile material used in nuclear weapons.

If world powers acknowledged Iran?s claimed right, ?this enrichment ? could be an issue of cooperation and talks,? Jalili said.

Ashton said the six world powers had put forward a number of proposals concerning ?what could be done around the 20 percent? enrichment level, suggesting that the issue could be addressed further at the Moscow talks, scheduled for June 18-19.

In Washington, Obama administration officials acknowledged that the talks had not produced anything close to the breakthrough some had hoped for. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the negotiations had been ?serious? and ?substantive? but that significant gaps remained.

?We think that the choice is now Iran?s to work to close the gaps,? Clinton told reporters at the State Department. ?We anticipate there will be ongoing work between now and the next meeting in Moscow, but it?s very clear that there?s a lot of work still to do.?

DeLorme inReach Two Way Satellite Communicator

DeLorme, an innovation leader in navigation technology, today announced that its award-winning inReach is now compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This innovation makes it possible for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to access an array of two-way satellite communications capabilities with the inReach and the DeLorme Earthmate App. inReach turns an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into a global two-way satellite communicator for use outside traditional wireless coverage areas. Users can send and receive messages to and from cell phones, email contacts and other inReach users, anywhere in the world. inReach can also be used to post messages to Facebook and Twitter.

?

inReach, launched in the fall of 2011, is the first consumer-affordable satellite communicator with two-way SOS and personal text messaging, message delivery confirmation, Follow-Me/Find-Me Tracking and Location, and global coverage. iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users can now benefit from all those capabilities.

inReach is a game-changing communication solution for anyone whose activities take them beyond cell phone range. Compact and lightweight, inReach is dustproof and waterproof, buoyant, and impact-resistant. inReach uses its internal GPS for remote tracking and embedding precise location coordinates in sent messages.

In the event of an emergency, the interactive SOS capability of the inReach provides an automatically triggered remote tracking service. Users can accurately describe their situation so proper resources can be deployed, and both user and responders can provide ongoing updates until help arrives.

Because inReach provides reliable two-way connections through Iridium, the world?s furthest-reaching satellite communications network, it can be used with complete confidence anywhere in the world on land, at sea or in the air.

Suggested retail price for inReach is $249.95, with annual satellite subscriptions beginning at $9.95 per month. Four-month seasonal plans are also available.

Oprah Winfrey Officially Lists Her Swank Chicago Co-Op - Celebrity ...

Wednesday, May 23, 2012, by Sarah Firshein

Talkshow titan Oprah Winfrey has bitten the bullet and finally listed the grand Chicago apartment she's had on the rental market for $15K a month. Again. According to the Chicago Tribune, Winfrey is asking $2.8M, quite a meager sum in comparison to the $5.6M she paid for the place in 2006, and less than half of the $6M she wanted when she listed it for the first time in 2008.

The 4,600-square-foot, 13-room Benjamin Marshall-designed Beaux Arts mansion, built in 1913 and perched on ritzy East Lake Shore Drive, boasts 10-foot ceilings, two foyers (one inner, one grand), a formal dining room, a solaium, a butler's pantry, a wine room, and three bedrooms. The views from the sixth floor are the real scene stealers, however: in summer, one can gaze upon the beach scenes along Lake Michigan. Glamorous, for sure, but keep in mind Winfrey has never actually lived here?hence, the listing photos that don't exactly scream "media mogul." In fact, it's almost pedestrian, so much so that it's nearly identical to the unit directly below, which is on the market for a nearly identical price despite the fact that it's owned by a decidedly non-famous person.

Now, if you're wondering why Winfrey is so nonchalantly unloading this place, it's because she prefers to lay her head in her enormous duplex nearby and, of course, in her $50M compound in Montecito, Calif. But if star power's a requirement in homes of this stature, fret not: the late comedic actor John Candy once lived in the building.

Full Cell Phone Reception on the T? Hallelujah! | March ...

A recent Boston.com article states that all underground sections of the MBTA will be fully wired for cell phone service by the end of the year. Unfortunately, the only mobile carriers currently on board for introducing or expanding to provide this underground coverage is AT&T and T-Mobile, while Verizon has yet to announce if it will expand.

The company designing and installing this network, InSite Wireless, will charge carriers to connect to the underground network and will give a percentage of the revenue to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The MBTA has signed a 15-year contract with InSite Wireless and is expecting this deal will net the company about $5.3 million.

This means there will no longer be a gap in coverage for me between the Fenway and Park Street stops when I?m riding the T to and from work . Being a daily T commuter and PR professional, this is amazing news (especially since my carrier is AT&T)!

For every PR professional, communication is key. Our job is 24/7, which explains why this career was ranked seven on CareerCast?s list of most stressful careers. We need to be available at all times, especially if there is a PR crisis and timely management is needed. If our clients need to get a message out and can?t reach us because of a dead spot underground, this could be detrimental to their image and reputation!

In a profession where fast responses are wanted and expected, this new cell phone coverage could save us a lot of stress. We can all admit that the T isn?t the most reliable source of transportation, so it is everyone?s fear it will shut down for extended periods of time in the exact spots you don?t have service. Once this plan is in full effect for all mobile carriers, that will no longer be a worry!

Starting Your Own Online Business From Scratch | Social Media ...

Starting an online business has become a very popular venture in recent years as more and more people become acclimated to using the Internet in their everyday lives. As little as twenty years ago, the Internet was new to the average consumer and not much more than a novelty; today, its rare to encounter a home in the Western world thats not stocked with at least one computer. Most middle class houses in America have multiple computers at this point.

What this means is that starting an online business can be profitable if done correctly, given the predominance of the Internet in the average household. People who are naturally entrepreneurial or those who have already started a non-internet based business will definitely have a leg up on the rest of the game, but for the right person whos willing to take appropriate steps to ensure success, starting an online business can be easy, fun, and even profitable.

In general, the differences between online business and traditional businesses are slight but distinct. Here are a few things that potential online business owners should take into consideration before jumping on the Information Superhighway:

Lower start up costs/high effort. One of the greatest things about online businesses is that they typically dont cost much to get started. Theres no need to rent out a space or pay utilities, and there are lots of free avenues to advertise with over the digital waves. However, dont be fooled into thinking that less money invested means less work, because nothing could be further from the truth. Online business owners often feel like their computers are grafted onto their hands!

Be a jack of all trades. Its not good enough just to have a stellar idea or a fantastic service. In order to be successful, you need to be able to do graphic design, understand web server technology, programming, and knowledge of the Internet as a marketing medium. For those that cant do all of this single handedly, outsourcing is an option, but this raises overall cost.

Think globally. This isnt opening up a small Mom and Pop store in your neighborhood. The business will be able to reach all corners of the globe, thanks to the Internet. The good part is that this potentially means more business the bad part is that owners will have to make provisions for costs such as international shipping, and maybe even pay for translated versions of their websites.

Marketers make the market. There are thousands of ways to market on the Internet, including pay-per-click, viral, drip, social networking, AdWords, and many others. Dont know what these things mean? Owners of successful online businesses take the time to learn!

Some of these attributes make working online easier, some may prove to be more of a challenge but they all make online businesses unique!

SpaceX hopes to launch craft early Tuesday

  • When NASA's space shuttle fleet retires in 2011, the space agency will have to rely on Russian spacecraft and the private sector to taxi cargo and humans to and from the International Space Station, even as it turns its focus to the technologies required to send humans beyond low-Earth orbit.

President Barack Obama views the policy as a boost to the nascent commercial spaceflight industry, where competition is already heating up to supply the taxi services. Some companies are also talking about offering out-of-this-world rides for researchers as well as tourists with deep pockets and a serious case of star lust. Click ahead to check out 10 of the top players in the race to commercialize space.

  • Space Exploration Technologies

PayPal co-founder Elon Musk has already signed up NASA as a marquee account for his high-flying venture, Space Exploration Technologies, also known as SpaceX. The government has a $1.6 billion contract with the Hawthorne, Calif., company to provide unmanned cargo deliveries to the International Space Station starting in 2011 with its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule.

This image shows the successful test launch of the Falcon 9 rocket on June 4. The rocket will eventually carry the Dragon to orbit. If all goes according to plan, astronauts may get a lift as well, starting in 2013. SpaceX has also secured contracts to launch next-generation satellites for the telecommunications company Iridium.

  • Orbital Sciences

Another NASA contract ? this one worth a reported $1.9 billion ? is in the bag at Virginia-based Orbital Sciences, which is planning to supply the International Space Station with its unmanned Cygnus spacecraft, shown here in an artist?s rendering. A newly-developed Taurus 2 rocket will ferry the cargo ship to space. If the opportunity presents itself, the company may advance plans to ferry humans to orbit as well.

  • Boeing

Boeing, the aerospace giant, has unveiled plans to flesh out designs and build a new capsule-based spaceship called the CST-100, which will take cargo and passengers to the International Space Station. The development push comes thanks to an $18 million NASA grant.

The Apollo-like capsule will carry a crew of seven and be designed to launch on a variety of rockets, including the Atlas and Delta rockets operated by the Boeing-Lockheed Martin joint venture known as the United Launch Alliance, as well as SpaceX's Falcon. Extra seats may be made available for paying passengers through a marketing arrangement with Space Adventures.

  • Masten Space Systems

While big NASA contracts have already gone to big names in the commercial space industry, lesser-known Masten Space Systems is in the race to pick up taxi fares to the International Space Station as well.

The company won a $1 million lunar challenge prize with the Xoie spacecraft shown here. It is now working on a next-generation vehicle based on the vertical-takeoff-and-landing design to ferry cargo. NASA funding will go toward four test flights of the spacecraft, called Xaero.

  • Sierra Nevada Corporation

The reusable Dream Chaser space plane, under development by Sierra Nevada Corp. subsidiary SpaceDev , has a look and feel reminiscent of a mini-space shuttle. Like NASA spacecraft, a rocket lifts the space plane up ? and at the end of its mission, the plane lands on a runway.

In fact, the transportation system is based on NASA technology, and the company recently received $20 million from the space agency to continue the plane's development. A full-scale mockup of the plane is shown in this file photo from its unveiling in 2006.

  • Bigelow Aerospace

Entrepreneur Robert Bigelow padded his bank account by building a hotel chain, Budget Suites of America. His latest pioneering venture, Bigelow Aerospace, is aimed at building affordable habitats in space.

Two prototype inflatable capsules have already been launched, and plans are in the works to put the more expansive Sundancer space station, shown here in an artist's conception, in orbit by 2015.

In this case, the overnight guests may include national space agencies as well as private-sector researchers and thrill-seeking tourists. Other players in the commercial space sector would taxi guests to and from the puffy digs.

  • Blue Origin

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, who amassed a fortune selling the printed word online, has few words to share about Blue Origin, his commercial space venture to fly a vertical launch and landing rocket to suborbital space.

This much is known: A demonstration vehicle called Goddard, shown here in a file photo, successfully took off and landed in 2006 from the company's private spaceport in west Texas. It's not yet known when the company's commercial vehicle will be ready for a public unveiling.

A bit more info: NASA recently awarded the company $3.7 million of a $50 million pie that it says is for the "development of system concepts, key technologies, and capabilities that could ultimately be used in commercial crew human space transportation systems." Blue Origin is concentrating on the development of a launch escape system that could push a NASA capsule to safety in case of emergency.

  • Virgin Galactic

Space enthusiasts with $200,000 to burn can book a ticket to ride to outer space with Virgin Galactic on the SpaceShipTwo spacecraft. The plane, meant for tourism as well as research, will haul six passengers and two pilots on suborbital flights that pop into outer space for a few minutes before returning to Earth.

The aircraft was designed by aerospace engineer Burt Rutan and colleagues at Scaled Composites. Test flights of the spacecraft, which launches from the WhiteKnightTwo mothership, are under way. Ticketholders will get their opportunity to ride once all systems are a go.

  • Armadillo Aerospace

Would-be space tourists who balk at the price tag for a ride on Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo might consider another option in the offing: $102,000 for a seat on Texas-based Armadillo Aerospace's vertical takeoff and landing vehicle.

The spacecraft, shown in this artist's conception, will rocket passengers into outer space for about five minutes of weightlessness and 360-degree views. Tickets can be booked through Space Adventures, the same company that has arranged rides to the International Space Station for the super-wealthy.

  • XCOR Aerospace

Yet another option for the space tourist is a $95,000 trip up to the inky blackness at the edge of space in XCOR's Lynx rocketship. The spacecraft, which has room for just one pilot and one passenger riding shotgun, takes off horizontally from a runway and climbs steeply to 200,000 feet, where views abound of planet Earth and the stars. Advance reservations for the hour-long trip can be booked through space tourism company RocketShipTours. An artist's rendering of the rocketship is seen here.

O's knock off Nats for 5th straight victory

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 10:39 p.m. ET May 19, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - Adam Jones flashed talent during his first four seasons with the Orioles that suggested he could be a star. So far this season, Baltimore's center fielder appears to be putting it all together.

Jones continued his consistent play with three hits and his 14th home run, Nick Markakis added a two-run homer and the Orioles matched a season high with their fifth straight win, 6-5 over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night.

The AL East leaders improved to 15-5 on the road. Washington lost its third in a row.

Jones has an 11-game hitting streak. In the season's first 41 games, Jones also has two 10-game runs and he's reached base safely in all but four games.

The Orioles are 13-1 when he homers.

"Early in the year, with men in scoring position, I was rushing. I had strikeouts, popouts with men in scoring position. I needed to back away from it, and let the ball come to me and see the ball. Lately, I've been trying to see the ball, use my hands and not really try to think too much about the play because thinking, hitters are never supposed to think," Jones said.

With four homers in his last five games, Jones is on a pace to hit more than 50.

"That would be awesome," Jones said. "My main mission every time I step into that box is hit this ball as hard as you can hit it."

Manager Buck Showalter, who evened his record as Baltimore's manager at 130-130 with the win, loves to talk about Jones.

"He's that type of talent and he's in a good place mentally. He's slowed the game down some, but at the same time, he's letting it rip every time he gets an opportunity to help his team," Showalter said.

The Orioles took a 6-0 lead in the fifth and barely held on. Robert Andino had a two-run single in the second, Jones a two-run home run in the third and Markakis a two-run homer in the fifth - all off Ross Detwiler (3-3).

Jason Hammel (5-1) pitched 5 1-3 innings for the win, allowing four runs and six hits. Baltimore relievers Luis Ayala, Troy Patton and Pedro Strop combined for 2 2-3 scoreless innings.

Orioles closer Jim Johnson allowed a two-out home run in the ninth to Ryan Zimmerman, who had three hits. But Johnson struck out Adam LaRoche for his 15th save in as many chances this year, and his 23rd straight.

Hammel has been dealing with a sore right knee. It delayed his previous start by four days. On Monday, Hammel struggled through five innings, allowing four earned runs and seven hits.

He didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, gave up a run in the fifth and three in the sixth.

"I get to a certain point now where its almost like I'm pitching on one leg and transfer everything to the arm. I got one out further than last time, I guess, so thats good," Hammel said.

"We've just got to get the leg stronger, but I'm definitely hitting the fatigue stage."

Washington scored a run in the fifth on three straight two-out singles, and drove Hammel out of the game in the sixth when Rick Ankiel hit an RBI double.

After Hammel left the game, the Nationals' third run scored on an infield out and the fourth on Roger Bernadina's RBI single.

"He was a tough cookie. It took us a while," Washington manager Davey Johnson said.

Detwiler gave up six runs and nine hits in five innings, the first time a Nationals starter gave up six runs since Sept. 10, 2011.

"I put the team in a hole early and they did a great job trying to dig out. Its just too much, really," Detwiler said.

NOTES: Johnson said that when RHP Chien-Ming Wang finishes his rehab assignment, he'll likely pitch him in the bullpen. Wang, who's on the disabled list with a pulled hamstring, was projected as a starter, but the emergence of Detwiler makes his addition to the starting rotation sticky. "I don't look at him as a reliever. I look at him as a quality, major league starter," Johnson said. ... Miguel Tejada, who signed a minor league contract with Baltimore earlier this month, will report to Triple-A Norfolk. Tejada, who had two prior stints with the Orioles, was in extended spring training in Sarasota, Fla. ... The crowd of 42,331 was the second largest in Nationals Park history. ... The Orioles will send Wei-Yin Chen (4-0) against the Nationals' Stephen Strasburg (3-1) on Sunday.

A team of scientists has developed a promising new strategy for "reactivating" genes that cause cancer tumors to shrink and die. The researchers hope that their discovery will aid in the development of an innovative anti-cancer drug that effectively targets unhealthy, cancerous tissue without damaging healthy, non-cancerous tissue and vital organs. The research will be published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

The team, led by Yanming Wang, a Penn State University associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, and Gong Chen, a Penn State assistant professor of chemistry, developed the new strategy after years of earlier research on a gene called PAD4 (peptidylarginine deiminase 4), which produces the PAD4 enzyme. Previous research by Wang and other scientists revealed that the PAD4 enzyme plays an important role in protecting the body from infection. The scientists compared normal mice with a functioning PAD4 gene to other mice that had a defective a PAD4 gene. When infected with bacteria, cells from the normal mice attacked and killed about 30 percent of the harmful bacteria, while cells from the defective mice battled a mere 10 percent. The researchers discovered that cells with a functioning PAD4 enzyme are able to build around themselves a protective, bacteria-killing web that Wang and his colleagues dubbed a NET (neutrophil extracellular trap). This NET is especially effective at fighting off flesh-eating bacteria.

Now, in their new study, Wang and his collaborators have focused on the less-desirable effects of the same PAD4 gene. While PAD4 is clearly a critical part of the body's defense strategy, the gene's over-expression may be linked to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. One situation in which the PAD4 enzyme is markedly increased is in patients with certain cancers, such as breast, lung, and bone cancers. "We know that the PAD4 gene acts to silence tumor-suppressor genes," said Wang. "So we theorized that by inhibiting the enzyme that this gene produces, the 'good guys' -- the tumor-suppressor genes -- would do a better job at destroying cancerous tissue and allowing the body to heal."

To test their theory, Wang and his colleagues treated mice that had cancerous tumors with a molecule to inhibit the PAD4 enzyme. They found that, especially when combined with additional enzyme inhibitors, the treatment worked as effectively as the most-commonly-used chemotherapy drug, doxorubicin, which shrinks tumors by about 70 percent.

Most striking, however, was that the PAD4 enzyme-inhibition strategy caused significantly less damage to healthy tissues. "Current chemotherapy drugs such as doxorubicin don't attack just tumors; unfortunately, they also attack healthy areas of the body," Wang explained. "That's why chemotherapy patients experience such terrible side effects such as weight loss, nausea, and hair loss. Because the PAD4 treatment appears to be less toxic, it could be an excellent alternative to current chemotherapy treatments."

Wang also explained that the PAD4 gene's dual personality -- on the one hand a helpful defense against bacteria, while on the other, a harmful silencer of cancer-suppressor genes -- can be understood from the perspectives of evolution and longer life spans. "Our ancestors didn't have antibiotics, so a bacterial infection could easily result in death, especially in young children," Wang explained. "So, back then, an overactive PAD4 gene was advantageous because the NET bacteria-trapping mechanism was the body's major defense against infection." Wang also explained that on the other hand, because people today have access to antibiotics, we live much longer than our ancestors did. "PAD4's bad effects -- cancer and autoimmune diseases -- tend to be illnesses that appear later in life," Wang said. "So nowadays, an overactive PAD4 gene, while still protective against bacteria, can be detrimental later in life."

After Solar Eclipse, June's Venus Transit of Sun Is Next Amazing Sky Sight

Sunday's "ring of fire" solar eclipse may be history, but skywatchers have another stunning event to look forward to ? next month's historic Venus transit of the sun.

On Sunday (May 20), the moon covered most of the sun's disk but left a ring of light blazing around its circumference. The resulting annular solar eclipse wowed skywatchers in parts of Asia, the Pacific region and western North America.

As impressive as that sight was, it may just be a warm-up for the Venus transit of June 5 (June 6 in much of the Eastern Hemisphere). Venus will cross the sun's face from Earth's perspective, appearing in silhouette as a tiny, slow-moving black dot.

The dramatic celestial event will be visible from all seven continents, and it's a must-see for skywatchers; Venus won't trek across the solar disk again for 105 years.??[Venus Transit of 2004: 51 Amazing Photos]

?"I think this is the last one I'll see," Dean Pesnell, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., told SPACE.com. Pesnell is project scientist for NASA's sun-watching Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) spacecraft, which will have an unparalleled view of the transit.

    A historic event

Venus transits occur in pairs that are eight years apart, but these dual events take place less than once per century. The last transit occurred in 2004, but the next won't come until 2117.

In addition to being rare and spectacular skywatching events, transits of Venus have played a large role in astronomical history. For example, scientists and explorers mounted huge expeditions to view the 18th century's two transits, which occurred in 1761 and 1769.

The goal was to answer one of astronomy's most important questions ? the distance from Earth to the sun. By precisely timing the transit's length from many different points around the globe, the reasoning went, scientists could calculate the Earth-sun distance using the principles of parallax. With this information in hand, the scale of the entire solar system would follow.

Famed British explorer Captain James Cook took part in the 1769 expedition, sailing to Tahiti and watching the transit from a place now known as Point Venus.

The 18th-century efforts came up short, but astronomers eventually got the data they needed from photographs taken during the next pair of Venus transits, which occurred in 1874 and 1882.

    Watching the transit

While most of the globe will able to watch at least part of the Venus transit on June 5-6, you may have to travel if you want to see Venus both enter and exit the solar disk.

Weather permitting, the entire seven-hour transit will be widely visible from eastern Asia, eastern Australia, New Zealand and the western Pacific, as well as Alaska, northern Canada and almost all of Greenland.

Not content to live vicariously through their spacecraft, Pesnell and some other SDO scientists will watch the transit from Fairbanks, Alaska. They're going to bring 10 to 20 educational displays with them, using the event to teach the public about the sun and SDO, Pesnell said.

If you plan to watch the transit, be safe. WARNING: Never look at the sun directly with your naked eye or through cameras, binoculars or small telescopes without proper filters. Doing so can result in serious and permanent eye damage, including blindness.

To safely observe the Venus transit, you can buy special solar filters to fit over your equipment, or No. 14 welder's glass to wear over your eyes.

The safest and simplest technique, however, is to observe the transit indirectly using the solar projection method. Use your telescope or one side of your binoculars to project a magnified image of the sun?s disk onto a shaded white piece of cardboard.

The projected image on the cardboard will be safe to look at and photograph. But be sure to cover the telescope?s finder scope or the unused half of the binoculars, and don?t let anyone look through them.

If you take any great photos of the Venus transit and would like them to be considered for use in a story or image gallery, send them to SPACE.com Managing Editor Tariq Malik at?tmalik@space.com.

Report: Pakistan Blocks Twitter Over Blasphemous Content, Facebook Complies? [Update: Back Up]

pakistan mountainsAnother day, another example of a country making it harder for its people to use the web and some of its most effective channels of communication? There are reports coming in from Pakistan that it has become the latest country to ban the use of Twitter. Update: it's now back up -- new post explaining development here. Read below for full story. According to the blog Dawn, the chairman of Pakistan's telecommunications authority has today imposed the restriction because of blasphemous content: it reports that Chairman Mohammad Yaseen blocked the site today "because Twitter refused to remove material related to a competition on Facebook to post images of Islam?s Prophet Muhammad." Facebook, apparently, has complied with the request, says the blog. Others are now starting to report the same, and below the break we have a screenshot of how accessing the site looks from one of our readers in Lahore who says he "cannot access the site at all." Getting blocked in Pakistan, if true, is particularly ironic because the two, paired up, played a major role in one of the most important news events to be broken in recent history: the raid and demise of Osama bin Laden, which was tweeted by?at least two people?watching the raids as they happened in the mountains of the country.

France's Hollande sticking to early Afghan pullout

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In his first visit to the Oval Office, French President Francois Hollande declared he will withdraw all French combat troops from Afghanistan by year's end, making clear to President Barack Obama the timeline for ending the U.S.-led war will not trump a campaign pledge that helped Hollande gain his new job.

Obama nodded along on Friday, knowing what was coming, but did not otherwise directly respond. Heading into a NATO summit on the course of the war and beyond, the White House has sought to emphasize the war coalition will remain firm even as nations pull back. And Hollande assured Obama that France was not out to cut and run.

"We will continue to support Afghanistan in a different way. Our support will take a different format," Hollande said. "I'm pretty sure I will find the right means so that our allies can continue with their mission and at the same time I can comply to the promise I made to the French people."

France's declaration has significance far beyond its borders. Hollande's move means France, one of the top contributors of troops to the war, will be removing the combat forces a full two years before the timeline agreed to by allies in the coalition. That could shift more of the burden to those allies and give them reason to hasten their own exit.

Hollande later told reporters that some "residual" number of France's current 3,300 troops will remain in Afghanistan after this year to provide training and to bring home equipment. But he alluded to the reaction that France's fast-track withdrawal may get from its NATO allies when they gather in Chicago Sunday and Monday.

"Our decision will be taken," he said. "I can't tell you that it will be applauded, but it will be taken."

One high-ranking French diplomat, speaking only on condition of anonymity to provide details of closed-door talks, told the AP that France had not gotten any serious pushback from American officials about Hollande's early pullout plan other than they did not want Paris to "proselytize" the quick pullout idea among other NATO allies in Afghanistan.

The United States and its allies plan to end the combat mission in Afghanistan at the end 2014. Afghanistan will move into the combat lead in 2013. The United States has about 90,000 troops in Afghanistan, far more than any partner nation, and is on pace to shrink that number to 68,000 by the end of September.

Obama and Hollande had never met, and their first interactions were closely watched given both the historic importance of the U.S-France relationship and the crises of war and economic strife confronting both leaders.

The mild-mannered Hollande, who has little international experience, ousted the more brash Nicolas Sarkozy and was sworn into office just days ago.

Now, in a hurry, Obama and Hollande will begin shaping a relationship that could prove one of the U.S. president's most important ones should he win a second term. Beyond their White House talks, Obama and Hollande are meeting at the G-8 summit Friday and Saturday in Maryland before shifting to the NATO conference in Obama's home town.

On the economy, Hollande and Obama both underscored that they want Europe to embrace a new approach to its debt crisis: more growth, less budget cutting. Obama's administration sees such a balanced approach as essential to stabilizing the eurozone and preventing its economic chaos, particularly in Greece, from spilling more broadly.

"President Hollande and I agree that this is an issue of extraordinary importance, not only to the people of Europe but also to the world economy," Obama said. He said managing the fiscal crisis in Europe must be coupled with a "strong growth agenda."

Hollande, elected May 6, is insisting on rethinking a European austerity treaty. But he also is trying to convince Obama and other leaders at the Group of Eight economic summit that his position will not worsen the debt crisis.

The French president also spoke for himself and Obama in sending a message to Greece, where fears remain that the debt-riddled country may have to abandon the 17-member currency union, which could jolt the global economy. Greece is set to hold elections on June 17 to end a political deadlock.

"We share the same views ? Greece must stay in the eurozone," Hollande said. Ahead of the election, he said, both he and Obama "wanted to send a message to that effect to the Greek people."

Hollande is trying to defend France's interests while building a relationship with Obama, widely popular in France but seen by some in Hollande's camp as too friendly with the recently ousted president, the conservative Sarkozy.

Obama and Hollande traded some light-hearted thoughts about presidential life and American fast food. Both offered expected assurances of their alliance.

"France is an independent country and cares about its independence," Hollande said, "but in old friendship with the United States of America."

Hollande also met later with British Prime Minister David Cameron for the first time before addressing French expatriates at the French Embassy ? where he suggested that Obama's looming election race made the American leader more accessible on Hollande's push for more growth-friendly policies.

He also hinted of his support for Obama in the election this fall.

"I think that we will begin a cooperation and partnership with President Obama that ? I hope for him, and for us ? will last a long time," Hollande said.

On the war, a senior U.S. official said the early combat exits of Dutch and Australian troops are the model for a probable agreement with France. In those cases trainers or other support forces are supplanting front-line combat forces. Such an agreement is likely to emerge from NATO discussions this weekend, the official said.

Polls show most French, and many other Europeans, want their countries out of Afghanistan, as do most Americans. Sensing the political winds, Sarkozy had prepared to break with NATO's in-together, out-together mindset and announced during the campaign that he'd pull out combat troops by the end of 2013, a year early.

Hollande, vying for election, promised to withdraw them even one year before that.
