Trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka opposition demands salary hike

* Trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka opposition demands salary hike
Sat, Dec 31, 2011, 10:09 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 31, Colombo: The Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS), a trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has threatened union action if salaries of employees attached to the electricity, water and petroleum sectors in the country are not raised.

Head of the JSS, UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena says the union would be compelled to resort to trade union action if the government fails to grant a 45% salary increase in January to the workers engaged in the three sectors.

He said the salary increase should be made as the scheduled increment in their salaries every three years.

The MP noted that the 2012 budget has not offered any relief to the working masses in the country.

According to Dr. Jayawardena, the working people in the country needed to join forces to agitate for a rightful salary increase.

He also observed that the government was trying to re-introduce the controversial private sector pension scheme through an amendment to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) Act.

92% Take Shelter

schizophrenia or prophecy? this is a hard film to score. its at least a 4 star film, and potentially 5, so ill go in between. it doesnt have a high re-watchability factor which is my only criticism, and that isnt really a criticism because its more a product of the material then the quality of the film. this is easily one of the best films of the year, and one of the better films in the past few years. shannon and chastain were both amazing in their roles, which for chastain amazes me because she has so little experience in film, and even the supporting players around them all added wonderful performances. the subject matter is as engaging as it gets, and as i hoped for through the entire film, things are not what they seem. beautiful direction by nichols, amazing cinematography for such a small scale story, and the material was handled with perfect care. nichols, shannon, and chastain probably all deserve oscar noms, and this is the type of soul stirring film that must be seen. i havent felt like this leaving a film since "a serious man".

China and Japan Currency Deal Not Threat to Dollar Reign

China?s surprise currency deal with Japan does little to chip away at the dollar?s reign as reserve currency, but it could foreshadow an era when the yuan has more global influence.

Prime Minister Yoshiko Noda and President Hu Jintao

The two countries announced Sunday that they would start direct trading their currencies, instead of using the dollar as intermediary. The move is part of a financial agreement between the two countries following meetings between Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiko Noda and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

China is Japan?s biggest trade partner with annual two-way trade of close to $350 billion, and as part of the agreement Japan will also apply to buy Chinese bonds next year.

?I don?t think this will be regarded as a defining moment,? said Deutsche Bank [DB? Loading...? ? ? () ? ] chief G-10 currency strategist Alan Ruskin.

?There?s enough bilateral trade to justify a direct conversion from the yuan to yen and yen to yuan. While there?s a wider story there of whether it changes the role of the dollar as a reserve currency, that?s much more questionable. It would be a very, very small step in that direction,? he said.

?While there?s a wider story there of whether it changes the role of the dollar as a reserve currency, that?s much more questionable,?
Alan Ruskin
Chief G-10 Currency Strategist, Deutsche Bank

Ruskin said the move by Japan to buy Chinese bonds may be a bigger part of the story than has been portrayed. ?I don?t think of Japan as being comfortable with the Chinese buying more yen assets as a way of diversifying from the dollar,? he said, adding the Japanese would prefer if they also had access to China?s capital markets.

The so-called Dim Sum bond market is about $30 billion and not very liquid. ?Japan wants market intelligence. It can achieve this by quite modest investments of a couple hundred millions dollars, not billions or tens of billions,? writes Marc Chandler, chief currency strategist at Brown Brothers Harriman.

Chandler said the agreement is not heralding decline for the U.S. ?This seems to be a stretch. Japan is not moving in China?s orbit. They recognize each other as rivals.?

Ruskin said China would have to conduct much more open policy in order to make the yuan more influential, and that is unlikely in the near future. ?If the yuan were to start trading independent of the dollar, that would start to shift currency regimes in Asia away from their dependence on the dollar, including the yen,? he said.

The tight peg between the dollar and Chinese yuan has been a source of friction between Beijing and Washington, which sees the close link as depressing the yuan, a disadvantage to U.S. industry. Chinese officials have said they would like to expand the use of the yuan globally and also would like to see the dollar play a less important role.

?We expect the Chinese currency will be internationalized. We?re a long way away from that? said Ruskin. ?You need free convertibility. You need a capacity to invest in highly liquid markets,? he said.

As for the dollar, "if it?s a chip away, it?s a small chip away. What you?ll find over time is there will be multiple chips away at the dollar?s reign as supreme reserve currency. The dollar is losing maybe one percent per annum,? he said, adding the euro was taking up some of the slack. But with the euro zone?s debt issues, the euro may not be much of an alternative for now.

Meanwhile, German Finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble commented on the currency deal. ?These are developments which show us that it?s good we have a unified Europe. United, Europe is the strongest economic area in the world. We have good chances to pursue our interests and the opportunity to implement them in the world,? he said.

Canada loses NHLer Devante Smith-Pelly to foot injury at world juniors

EDMONTON - Canada's team at the world junior hockey championship suffered a major blow in its tournament opener.

Forward Devante Smith-Pelly broke his left foot after blocking a shot in the second period of Canada's 8-1 rout of Finland on Monday and will miss the remainder of the tournament.

"Heartbreaking way to end my tournament, but I know the guys will do the country proud regardless. Thank you everyone for your kind words," said Smith-Pelly on his Twitter page.

The Anaheim Ducks forward, one of only two NHL players on the Canadian team, cannot be replaced on the 22-man roster.

The only situation in which a team could add another player at this point in the tournament would be in the case of a goaltender injury.

The six-foot, 207-pound Toronto native scored twice Thursday in Canada's 7-1 pre-tournament win over Switzerland 7-1.

The Ducks drafted Smith-Pelly in the second round, 42nd overall, and has contributed three goals and two assists in 26 games with Anaheim this season.

"This is a very unfortunate injury for Devante," said Ducks general manager Bob Murray in a statement. "We anticipated him playing a prominent role for Canada at the 2012 world junior tournament. Although this is a big loss for Canada and the Anaheim Ducks, we fully expect Devante to return to full health this season."

Hockey Canada says Smith-Pelly will remain with the Canadian junior team.

Israel is considering the recognition of Armenian genocide

JERUSALEM (AFP) - The Israeli parliamentary panel discussed on Monday morning to recognize the Armenian genocide, a move expected to lead to the aggravation of tension in relations with Turkey.

The Knesset Education Committee to discuss the proposal as a twenty-fourth of April, which began killing Armenians of the Ottoman Empire, on the anniversary of "massacre of the Armenian people."

During the discussion on the "recognition of the Armenian genocide of the Jewish people" as defined by the Commission in a statement, he stressed jurists, historians and members of the Armenian community's commitment to Israel's moral to officially recognize the Armenian tragedy Kabadh. However, the Commission has not issued any decision or announcement and will meet again to discuss the topic in the future.

This is the first time that a similar debate was opened to the media and the people. The Knesset rejected a similar proposal in 2007, when relations between Israel and Turkey are good.

But relations have entered a major crisis last year, when Israeli forces killed nine Turks in an attack on a Turkish ship in the fleet carrying humanitarian aid on the way to the Gaza Strip in an attempt to break the Israeli naval blockade imposed on it.

Turkey expelled last October the Israeli ambassador and canceled military ties, while Israel last week canceled a contract for the sale of air monitoring equipment to Ankara dates back to 2008.

He said Alex MillerAlex Miller, Chairman of the Committee of the Party, the far-right Yisrael Beiteinu in the opening session that the discussion will focus on aspects of "educational and academic" of the subject Ktrivh appropriate to teach in schools, universities, and not a diplomatic and security aspects.

He also stressed the Knesset Speaker Rivlin Ravin that the issue is not political.

Rivlin said the Committee at the beginning of the debate that "this issue was not raised in the Knesset because something happened between Israel and Turkey, not because we want to exploit the political situation to settle accounts."

However, the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was in the discussion warned of the repercussions of any Israeli move to recognize the Armenian genocide on the already strained relations with Turkey.

And Irit Lillian "Our relationship with them very fragile today and paid for over the red line is not sound," adding that "the recognition of similar at this stage could have serious repercussions."

The MP said Arieh Eldad of the right National Union party, which put forward the bill with Rep. Zahava Gal?n of the leftist Meretz Party, "in the past was a mistake to raise issue because our relations with Turkey were good and now is wrong because the bad relations with them, when will come the right time?".

Bakhurji MK Zahava Gal?n that changes in the diplomatic arena may mean that the project could get the support of this time. Gal?n said that Israel has "a moral and historical obligation" to recognize the genocide and a half million Armenians, "especially since we are still fighting against Holocaust denial." It confirmed that "the Israeli educational system can not silence the Armenian genocide."

Georgette Avakian of the Armenian National Committee in Jerusalem, said they were satisfied with reservations on the outcome of the meeting.

Avakian said, told AFP: "There is progress in the Educational Committee has dealt with him (...) but I was disappointed they did not reach any result, and they postponed it" for further discussions.

The massacres and the displacement of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1917 led to the fall of more than 1.5 million people killed by Armenians and between 250 thousand and 500 thousand as Turkey Paris ,Ottawa and the European Parliament, accknowledged especially the Armenian genocide.

In France, the National Assembly Thursday approved a bill criminalizing the denial of any genocide, including the Armenian genocide, prompting Turkey to the suspension of political and military cooperation with Paris.

Commentary: NCAA, Ohio St., both to blame

By Brian Kollars, Staff Writer Updated 1:15 PM Sunday, December 25, 2011

The in-laws came up huge with an amazing gift. If you drive past our house, you?ll see a small leg lamp in the window, a replica of the cussing dad?s big prize in ?A Christmas Story.? Our teenager is appalled that I would display this fine piece of craftsmanship in such a prominent space but, hey, she doesn?t pay the mortgage.

Ohio State football fans got a big lump of coal last week when the NCAA surprised everyone by banning the Buckeyes from a bowl game ... next season. There?s no way the fallout from Jim Tressel?s dirty little secret should stretch into 2012. But it will.

The NCAA allegedly employs bright people who could consult a calendar and figure out that Ohio State was in line for a bowl game this year. Why not step up the pace and drop this bombshell a month earlier? That way, OSU doesn?t go to a meaningless bowl game this season.

On the other hand, the arrogant OSU administration has fumbled at every turn, from the ridiculous news conference during which Tressel was given a big smooch to the weak self-imposed sanctions. If there was any hint of this coming down, OSU should have said no to the Gator Bowl.

I?m sure the attorneys are drawing up Gene Smith?s golden parachute right now.

The NBA tips off today after what seemed like a three-day exhibition season. The most intriguing story line is not the status of Kobe Bryant?s wrist or why Mariah Carey is not part of the league?s marketing plan.

The big question: How long will it take Jack Nicholson to snub the Lakers for the Clippers?

Jill sent me to that fancy new Kroger store in Kettering two days before Christmas. I?m sure she was laughing, but I survived my first trip to the store despite the hand-to-hand combat in the baking goods aisle.

A big thanks to Mary, who checked me out. She asked if I had a Kroger card and my reply was a blank stare. She told me to punch in my phone number, which led to 22 bucks of savings!

Merry Christmas to all of you vociferous readers. We?ll return next week with some New Year?s resolutions for athletes, etc. If you have any suggestions, send them my way and I?ll give you credit for your clever ideas.

Iran's navy warns foreign copter away from drill (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? The Iranian navy says it warned off a foreign helicopter that had approached the site of a naval drill it is conducting in international waters.

A spokesman for the drill, Rear Adm. Mahmoud Mousavi, tells state TV the helicopter left the area immediately after the warning Sunday. He gives no other details.

Iran's navy began the 10-day drill on Saturday in waters beyond the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.

The exercise could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels that operate in the same area.

Iran regularly holds war games and has also been active in fighting piracy in the Gulf of Aden.

Too many stars: Vietnam in flag gaffe with China (AP)

BEIJING ? Vietnam laid out all the stops this week for a visit from China's expected future leader ? including flags with an extra star.

The gaffe came during a welcoming ceremony for Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping in Hanoi on Wednesday when children waved flags decorated with six stars.

China's flag has only five stars ? one big star surrounded by four smaller ones.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told reporters Friday that Vietnam had told the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi that it was "a technical error."

Relations between the countries have been strained over competing claims in the potentially oil-rich South China Sea. Vietnam and China signed cooperation agreements on youth affairs and health during Xi's visit.

DUNFERMLINE 0-2 ST JOHNSTONE (SANDAZA) 1438: Tempers flare at St Mirren Park as Marc McAusland reacts angrily to a sliding challenge from Nikica Jelavic. The pair are booked for squaring up to each other and Gers skipper Steven Davis also goes into the book for a bit of squabbling. 1437: Darren Barr concedes a free-kick against Motherwell's Keith Lasley but Tom Hateley's powerful shot whizzes just over the bar. 1436: We're back under way for the second half in our 1330 games...1434: Rangers manager Ally McCoist looks on in disbelief as Dorin Goian is sent packing after picking up a second yellow card for a foolish tug at Gary Teale's shirt. 1433 RED CARD: Rangers defender Dorin Goain 1432: St Mirren bring on Nigel Hasselbaink for Steven Thompson as they look to give Rangers an additional defensive headache with a little over five minutes remaining. 1430: Rangers sub Kyle Bartley has joined Nikica Jelavic up front. We could see a few high balls aimed at the big man on loan from Arsenal in the closing stages. 1428: St Mirren are missing a trick here: time and again they have the chance to break in numbers against 10-man Rangers but they're continually flagged offside. Danny Lennon's hopping mad in his Andre Villas-Boas raincoat on the touchline. 1425: St Johnstone lead by a goal to nil at the break at East End Park, courtesy of a Chris Smith own goal, after he looked on in horror as he got the last touch on Liam Craig's corner. Thankfully, we've received no further reports of smoke bombs or a second "rumpus". 1423: FULL-TIME INVERNESS CT 2-1 ABERDEEN1421: David Templeton, who has been the pick of the Hearts bunch today, trots off to wild acclaim from the home fans inside Tynecastle and Andy Driver makes a somewhat surprise appearance, after being quoted as saying he didn't want to play for manager Paulo Sergio again... 1420: Aberdeen defender Kari Arnason wastes a great chance to level the scores in added time as he blasts the ball wide! Inverness are on course to narrow the gap on the Dons to two points. Celtic goal: Persistent play down the right by Cha Du-Ri pays off as his high ball is headed down into the net by Georgios Samaras, second before the half-time whistle. 1417 HALF-TIME: DUNDEE UTD 0-1 HIBS

CELTIC 1-0 KILMARNOCK (GEORGIOS SAMARAS) 1415: Midfielder Victor Wanyama blasts the ball high over the Killie goal but the referee had already blown for a free-kick to the visitors: frustration is building among the home fans at Celtic Park. 1414: Motherwell manager Stuart McCall must've delivered a few rockets in the dressing room at the break as they've come roaring out of the traps but still trail 2-0 at Tynecastle.1412: Rangers continue to search for an equaliser and, if anything, St Mirren appear to be down to 10 men. 1411: Leigh Griffiths comes agonisingly close to doubling Hibs' lead with a header but Pat Fenlon's side remain a goal to the good against Dundee United at Tannadice and are looking good. Aberdeen goal: The Dons are suddenly back in this game as Rory Fallon fires home a left-foot shot and Inverness have yet to keep a clean sheet in any match this season... 1406: GOAL! INVERNESS CT 2-1 ABERDEEN (RORY FALLON)1402: Rangers are pressing hard for an equaliser and Steven Davis picks out Nikica Jelavic but the big striker lacks composure and shoots wide when one-on-one with keeper Craig Samson. What a chance! Moments earlier St Mirren defender Marc McAusland connected with Gary Teale's free kick at the back post but could only nudge the ball wide from close range. 1401: Inverness goal: Gregory Tade somehow manages to slide a ball through a packed Aberdeen defence to find the net and double the hosts' lead.1400: St Mirren gaffer Danny Lennon, sporting an natty Andre Villas-Boas raincoat, is doing his dinger as a Lee Wallace handball goes unpunished right under his nose. 1359: GOAL! INVERNESS CT 2-0 ABERDEEN (GREGORY TADE) Hibs goal: The visitors are ahead at Tannadice as a predatory "toe poke" from Leigh Griffiths leaves Dusan Pernis helpless. Inverness goal: Terry Butcher's men break the deadlock as Roman Golobart heads home from close range. 1355: Celtic's delivery has let them down while Killie seem happy to sit in for now, wary of opening themselves up. 1354: GOAL! But it remains goalless.1349: Despite my note of festive optimism, there's little to warm the hearts of Inverness and Aberdeen fans early in the second half. "It's a good game if you enjoy watching players compete against each other in high-intensity tackles. But there's not really been exciting stuff for fans to watch," says BBC Scotland pundit Brian Irvine at the Caledonian Stadium1448: Gary Hooper flicks the ball wide after Cammy Bell spills a shot by James Forrest. The normally deadly Hooper off target on this occasion for Celtic and it remains goalless. 1446: BBC Sportsound pundit Derek Ferguson has informed us that the St Johnstone fans inside East End Park for the game against Dunfermline have let off a smoke bomb, causing a bit of a "rumpus". I'd love to read a poem by the legendary Jim Leishman on the whole festive debacle! 1342: Hearts midfielder Scott Robinson blasts the ball high over the bar, while having better options to his left and right. The Jambos are threatening to demolish 'Well here.1341: Kilmarnock winger Dean Sheils fires across the face of the Celtic goal after good work by Paul Heffernan. 1339: Lee McCulloch's dismissal has excited the Twitterati. "The elbow looks to me not violent and a bit accidental: harsh red card," says Silvio Di Fede and The_Panick asks "When will McCulloch learn?" 1338: James Forrest smashes a thunderous shot wide of the Kilmarnock goal. Good effort from the Celtic winger. 1336: HALF-TIME ST MIRREN 2-1 RANGERS St Mirren goal: The Buddies are going wild in Paisley as they take the lead against 10-man Rangers as Paul McGowan races in behind the visitors' defence to pick up a pass from David Barron and places a neat finish into the corner of the net. Referee: Stevie O'Reilly 1323: Rangers keeper Allan McGregor makes a great instinctive save as Steven Thompson gets a flick on a corner from Paul McGowan. 1321: Inverness and Aberdeen fans deserve their half-time pie & bovril after a fairly low key opening 45 minutes in the windswept Highlands. Hopefully, there'll be a little more in the way of goalmouth action after the break to offer some festive cheer... 1320 HALF-TIME: INVERNESS CT 0-0 ABERDEEN Hearts goal: The hosts break the deadlock at Tynecastle, courtesy of a howitzer from Ian Black as he fires an unstoppable shot past Darren Randolph. The Jambos are rewarded for their early pressure and lead 1-0. 1318: GOAL! HEARTS 1-0 MOTHERWELL (IAN BLACK) 1317: Maurice Edu is on to shore things up in the Rangers midfield. Referee: George Salmond 1315: Graham Carey, with his ear still throbbing from that clout from Lee McCulloch, fires a long-range effort over the crossbar. 1314: BBC Scotland pundit Billy Dodds says referee Steven McLean's decision to show McCulloch the red card was spot on. Rangers boss Ally McCoist is pacing the technical area: he's not a happy camper... 1310 RED CARD: Rangers are down to ten men as midfielder Lee McCulloch is given his marching orders for a stray elbow challenge on Graham Carey. 1309: Mopgaw tweets: "Win for the Dons and both the Old Firm and we can start looking towards the top six! COYR!"1308: Former Rangers favourite Nacho Novo is watching his old team from the main stand in Paisley. He looks frozen stiff. The Spaniard must have lost some of that adopted Scottish grit after returning to play in his homeland. 1307: Motherwell keeper Darren Randolph repels some early Hearts danger as he deals with David Templeton's low, wicked centre. 1305: Josh Magennis gives Inverness keeper Ryan Esson a scare with a close-range effort that spins out for a corner, it remains goalless in the Highlands. 1304: We're under way at Tynecastle... 1303: Referee Steven McLean takes an age to show Graham Carey a yellow card for a late tackle on Lee McCulloch. He may just have been influenced by the cluster of blue shirts surrounding him to complain.1302: "What a whirlwind start, we've got the first goal but I don't think it's over yet" BBC Scotland pundit Billy Dodds on Rangers breaking the deadlockRangers goal: It's been coming... ST MIRREN 0-1 RANGERS (LEE WALLACE) 1256: It's St Mirren's turn to threaten as Paul McGowan's 25-yard effort is comfortably gathered by Allan McGregor. 1255: What a chance for Rangers! Midfielder Steven Davis threads throw a beautiful ball for Kyle Lafferty to collect but the Northern Ireland international curls an effort inches wide of goal. It remains goalless in Paisley and Inverness.1253: "It's sometimes easier to play in rain - but wind is one of the most difficult conditions to play in." BBC Scotland pundit Brian Irvine keeps his head down while giving a quick weather update on the blustery conditions in Inverness. 1252: Ryser85 tweets: "Let's hope Aberdeen can keep their form going and Rangers can do us a favour and beat St Mirren." 1251: Rangers respond with a lightening break and Gregg Wylde flashes a shot wide rather than play in the unmarked Kyle Lafferty - the game is wide open! 1250: St Mirren string together about a dozen passes but the move fizzles out as they fail to get an effort on target to test Allan McGregor. Positive start, though, from the Buddies.1249: From Graeme in Edinburgh by text on 80295: "I hope Hearts can play today like they did last week but my worry would be especially for the derby on the 2nd. How many of those players will want to put their foot in knowing an injury could cost them a move?" 1248: We're under way in Paisley for St Mirren against league leaders Rangers. 1245: Gergory Tade puts a tempting ball into the Aberdeen penalty area, but none of his team-mates can profit and a chance for Inverness goes a-begging. 1244: "Rangers haven't been firing on all cylinders recently but winning championships is all about accruing points."
BBC Scotland commentator Rob Maclean1240: Celtic manager Neil Lennon has raised concerns over playing SPL games on Christmas Eve and believes it's unfair to ask fans to come through the turnstiles on Christmas Eve. It'll be interesting to see whether it has an impact on attendances at this afternoon's six SPL games. 1236: Hearts won't provide any pies or home baking this afternoon, with speculation that pundit Sandy Clark's appetite is the reason behind the move. APNewsBreak: Woman faces terrorism-related charge (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A California woman was indicted Wednesday on charges accusing her of sending money to Pakistan to help fund terrorist attacks against U.S. military personnel, authorities said.

Oytun Ayse Mihalik, 39, of La Palma, faces three counts of providing material support to terrorists and one count of making a false statement. If convicted of all counts, Mihalik could face up to 53 years in prison.

Mihalik funneled about $2,000 to a person in Pakistan over a three-week period beginning late last year, knowing the money would be used to prepare for and carry out attacks against the U.S. military and others overseas, federal prosecutors said.

Mihalik, who worked as a pharmacist, has been in federal custody since she was arrested in August after she attempted to board a flight to Turkey, her native country.

She previously pleaded not guilty to the false statement charge.

Mihalik lied to federal agents during an interview at Los Angeles International Airport following a six-month trip to Turkey by telling them she never used an alias to wire money overseas and she had only sent funds once, authorities said.

She told investigators the money was meant for a family friend who was having financial problems, according to an affidavit. Authorities wouldn't elaborate about how they know the money Mihalik wired overseas was going to be used for terrorist attacks.

However, court documents reveal Mihalik's arrest is "related to national security investigations in other areas of the United States." As of August, Mihalik had been cooperating with investigators, records show.

"The charges are based on the defendant's intent to cause harm to U.S. military personnel," said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles. "We have not alleged any attacks that may have resulted from the funding because the legal issue is the defendant's intent as to what the money would be used for."

Defense attorney Alan Eisner said no new evidence has been offered up by prosecutors since his client's arrest four months ago, and the money sent overseas was donated to charity.

"The evidence will show she's not funding a terrorist organization," Eisner said.

A trial on the false statement charge was set for February. Mihalik will be arraigned on the new charges at a later date.

Google Voice Update for iPhone, iPad, iPod Brings Multi-Recipient Texting

Google has just announced an update to its Voice app for iOS devices, which is available on iTunes for free download.

The?updated Google Voice comes with new features like multi-recipient texting, contact autocomplete, multi-line text entry field with character count. The new version, 1.4.0.2372, also has improved Sprint support integrated, which the app description explains "sends all calls to the native dialer when the phone is integrated with Sprint".

Google Voice is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod running on iOS 3.0 or later, and offers users the possibility of sending free text messages to US and also to make international calls at competitive (or as Google puts it "insanely low") rates.

A Google Voice account, which is free, is required for use of this application. In addition to making calls from their own Google Voice number, users can also access their voicemail and get transcriptions.

The only bad news is that Google Voice is not available outside the US. However, the company announced on the Google Voice blog that their will be "extended free domestic calls within the US and Canada for 2012."

VMware View delivers virtual Windows machines on Linux, OS X and Kindle Fire

Kindle FireThere are very few places left in this world where you can't access a virtualized Windows PC. VMware has its, well, wares available on almost every platform imaginable. Its View client, for connecting to remotely-hosted enterprise servers has become a particularly integral part of the company's plan to put powerful virtualization tools at the tips of your fingers. After debuting on the iPad back in March, followed shortly afterwards by an Android edition, VMware View is now coming to Mac and Linux machines as well as the Kindle Fire. The feature set doesn't contain many surprises, but full screen support in Lion makes a welcome appearance in the list. The app should already be appearing in the Amazon App Store and the Ubuntu Software Center, though you wont find it in the Mac App Store... at least not yet. Check out the complete PR after the break.

Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup

This week, as police shut down the Occupy encampment in Los Angeles, a trio of stories fortified the movement's fundamental argument about the two-tiered nature of our democracy. First up was a report on how, in July 2008, then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson gave a group of Wall Street cronies inside information on the rescue of Fannie and Freddie. Then came word that, in the midst of the financial meltdown, the Fed had secretly loaned banks $7.7 trillion with absolutely no strings attached -- loans the banks used to turn a $13 billion profit (while foreclosures escalated and small businesses struggled to get loans). Finally, heroic Judge Jed Rakoff's rejection of a sweetheart fraud settlement the SEC had gift-wrapped for Citigroup turned a spotlight on how the public interest is routinely sacrificed on the altar of expediency, and how the lack of accountability makes it much more likely that the wrongdoers will do wrong again and again without paying a real price.

Robert Scheer: You Can Arrest an Idea

The bankers slept well. Their homes in Beverly Hills were not spotlighted by a noisy swarm of police helicopters, searchlights burning through the sanctity of the night, harassing the forlorn City Hall encampment of those who dared protest the banks' seizure of our government. I live within sight of the iconic Los Angeles City Hall, and at first I thought it was being used once again as a movie location, given the massive police presence, as if an alien invasion was being thwarted.

Not eager to test the resilience of my new heart valve, I hesitated until the first crack of dawn to visit the place where former Labor Secretary Robert Reich and I had spoken weeks before at a teach-in on the origins of the economic crisis. I described the scene back then as a Jeffersonian moment, exactly the kind of peaceful assembly to redress grievances that the Founders of our nation enshrined in the Bill of Rights. But at 5 a.m. Wednesday there was only a graveyard of democratic hope. The protesters were gone, 200 arrested for exercising their constitutional rights, and only the television crews stayed to pick over the carcass of tents, books and posters, including one I pulled from the debris that read "99% you can't arrest an idea." Actually, you can, and the bankers have, as a result, been able to reoccupy Los Angeles' City Hall and every other contested outpost of power throughout the nation.

The liberal Democratic mayor, a past president of the Southern California ACLU, was pleased with the efficiency of the "community policing" approach of his police department. "I said that here in L.A. we'd chart a different path, and we did," Antonio Villaraigosa boasted. However, the result was the same as elsewhere; the bankers were protected from the scorn they so richly deserve and there will no longer be a visible monument to the pain that they have caused. To ensure a pristine, amoral town square, huge concrete-anchored fences were quickly installed to prevent further access to the public space surrounding City Hall.

Of course the traditional cardboard encampments of the homeless three blocks away, a sprawling and constant feature of life in downtown Los Angeles, remained undisturbed. Sanitation and safety issues are of no concern as long as such manifestations of deep societal inequality are so far from the corridors of power as to be, in effect, invisible.

Such profound contradictions in the application of state power seemed not at all to bother the first wave of government workers arriving at the various local, state and federal office buildings. I lined up with some of the early birds at the employee entrance to City Hall -- the closed public entrance had a forbidding police presence -- and told the guard that I was there with a literary offering for the mayor, whom I have long known.

My gesture was quite pathetic. I brought him a copy of my book "The Great American Stickup," which he had once claimed to have read and admired, to remind him that he should be arresting the real criminals rather than the victims of their financial swindles. For a confirmation of that point, I also intended to present the mayor with the transcript of U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff's ruling this week rejecting the sweetheart deal between the SEC and Citigroup. The settlement, one of dozens like it offered to the banks, would have let Citigroup off the hook for a pittance in fines in return for closing cases involving immense corruption on the part of the bankers, who would not have to admit guilt for their crimes.

And crimes they clearly are, far beyond the scope of pitching a tent in a public park. As Judge Rakoff stated, the Securities and Exchange Commission has charged Citigroup with "a substantial securities fraud" in the sale of a billion dollars' worth of toxic securities that were designed to fail and which the bank had bet against. Rakoff, who has handled a number of these cases, complained that Citigroup, like the other major banks, is a recidivist. Citigroup had already paid fines for four similar scams. The judge observed that "although this would appear tantamount to an allegation of knowing and fraudulent intent, the SEC, for reasons of its own, chose to charge Citigroup only with negligence" despite the far more serious charges called for in securities law.

The failure of the SEC or any other government agency to hold the banks accountable provides the essential justification for citizen action of the sort the Occupy movement has offered. In his concluding summary, Rakoff stated: "Finally, in any case like this that touches on the transparency of financial markets whose gyrations have so depressed our economy and debilitated our lives, there is an overriding public interest in knowing the truth. In much of the world, propaganda reigns, and truth is confined to secretive, fearful whispers. Even in our nation, apologists for suppressing or obscuring the truth may always be found."

Count the liberal mayor of Los Angeles, a man I have respected and voted for, as one of those apologists for suppressing truth in the name of civic order. As I meekly allowed myself to be ordered about by the police clearing the area so that the concrete barriers could be installed, I wondered whether I had not been reduced to the status of a fearful whisperer.

Pets Need Exercise, Too | Pekin Insurance

Posted on Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Exercise is an essential part of a great relationship with your pet. Pets that do not receive the proper amount of exercise will find other ways to act out, for example, by chewing on your shoes or carpet. The remedy is an easy one: exercise.

I know that it may conflict with your busy schedule or lifestyle, but there are many options to get your dog exercise. Obviously, you have the ability to walk your dog, but what happens when the weather turns nasty? Let?s face it; we do live in the Midwest.

I have found that something as simple as tossing a ball down your hallway for 5 to 10 minutes can run enough steam off your pets so that you can relax for a nice evening without them causing trouble. Also, when the snow falls, which it will, make sure you leave some outside toys inside because throwing that tennis ball out into the snow for even 5 minutes will create enough exercise for your pet to last the entire evening.

So, you have tried playing with your pets inside and outside for 5 to 10 minutes and they still have too much energy. The other option is taking your dogs to a boarding place, where you can pay a daily rate for your pets to play all day and pick them up when you get off work. Think of it as pet day care. There obviously is a cost to this, but it is another way to get your pet plenty of exercise.

Furthermore, look into your town?s parks and recreation facilities because most cities have a dog park or parks dedicated to pets.

Please take the time to give your pets plenty of exercise. Not only is it good for them, it is good for the owner, as well.

Study identifies new ways to kill the human malaria parasite

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

An international team of scientists has announced a breakthrough in the fight against malaria, paving the way for the development of new drugs to treat the deadly disease.

According to the World Health Organisation malaria currently infects more then 225 million people worldwide and accounts for nearly 800,000 deaths per year. Most deaths occur among children living in Africa where a child dies every 45 seconds of malaria and the disease accounts for approximately 20% of all childhood deaths. The disease is caused by the malaria parasite, Plasmodium, that is injected into the human host through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito.

Now researchers have discovered new ways in which the malarial parasite survives in the bloodstream of its victims.

The advance is the result of a collaboration between medical scientists at the University of Leicester in the UK and a team from the French Institut National de la Sant? et de la Recherche M?dicale (Inserm) working at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Molecular Parasitology in Glasgow and the Ecole Polytechnique F?d?rale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland), now relocating to Monash University in Melbourne (Australia).

The breakthrough was made by the teams led by Professor Andrew Tobin at the University of Leicester and Professor Christian Doerig, now at Monash University, and is published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature Communications and was funded by The Wellcome Trust, the European Commission, Inserm and EPFL.

Professor Tobin, of the Department of Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, said: "I am proud to be involved in a collaboration that has made such an impact on malaria research. Our study opens new avenues for researchers to look for new drugs that treat malaria."

Professor Doerig explained "We have shown that a crucial element that is required by malaria parasites to survive in the human blood stream is a group of enzymes called protein kinases. If we stop these proteins kinases from working then we kill the malaria parasites. We are now looking for drugs that do exactly that ? stop the protein kinases from working. If we find these drugs then we will have a new way of killing the malaria parasite."

Professor Tobin added: "It seems perfectly realistic to us that we can now develop novel anti-malaria drugs based on the findings that we have made ? it certainly is a big moment in our fight against this terrible disease that mainly affects the world's poorest people."

Tobin and Doerig also warn: "The parasite is very clever at adapting to drug treatments and in so doing becoming resistant to drugs. In fact, there is already evidence that the parasite is developing resistance to the most recent front line treatment for malaria.

"To avoid the catastrophic affects of widespread resistance to anti-malarial treatments we need a continued pipeline of new anti-malaria drugs. Our discovery provides one avenue towards populating such a pipeline."
